We Found the Best Walking Sandals for Women After 2,000 Hours of Wear-Testing
The top options for your next warm-weather adventure
Whether you’re hitting the trails or strolling around town, having the best walking sandals for women can help you go the extra mile. When it comes to footwear, prioritize comfort, support, and durability for an enjoyable experience. You should also ensure your shoes have enough arch support for your foot type, says podiatrist Sondema N. Tarr, DPM, And find sandals with reliable traction, a heel strap for stability, and plenty of cushioning, adds podiatrist Anne Sharkey, DPM.
To find the best walking sandals for women, we first consulted three podiatric experts to learn more about what key features to look for and avoid when shopping. Then, we researched dozens of options from top, trusted footwear brands. Finally, we wear-tested 31 pairs of sandals across dozens of miles for over 2,000 hours in total. During our test, we evaluated each pair based on fit, stability, responsiveness, cushioning, comfort, quality, and overall value. We also had a walking coach from our Review Board review this story for accuracy and how to shop for the right walking sandal based on your personal footwear needs.

Who They’re For
Best if you want to balance fashion and function, whether you're running errands, boosting your step count, or taking on a light hike.
Why We Love Them
Keen’s Elle Mixed Strap Sandals feel amazing on our feet from the moment we put them on. And as we trek across all types of terrain, they offer solid shock absorption and springy responsiveness. These sandals also boast soft, supportive cushioning and a contoured footbed that offers unmatched comfort and maximum support.
During testing, they passed the bend test, flexing slightly but not twisting from side to side. Despite their reliable durability and stable construction, these sandals feel lightweight and easy to wear for long distances. We also appreciate the convenient bungee system closure that’s easy to adjust as our feet swell throughout the day. If we didn’t already love these stylish sandals enough, they also feature heel padding for blister protection, ensuring an enjoyable experience with every step.
Potential Flaws
- The lace lock dug into our feet when standing up from a kneeling position, so these may not be the best choice for working in the garden or similar activities.
- While we did notice that the cork footbed isn’t as breathable, these sandals have an anti-odor treatment to keep them smelling fresh.
Meet Our Testers
One tester has moderately wide feet and plantar fasciitis that can flare up if she doesn’t have the proper arch support. She spends time walking her dog and pushing a stroller every day. Our other tester goes on 30-minute walks daily and has to be on her feet five days a week for her job. She is pretty active on weekends at the playground with her kids and walking her dogs.

Who They’re For
Best if you’re a frequent traveler, light hiker, or daily adventurer—especially if you prefer an athletic aesthetic.
Why We Love Them
From the moment we slipped into Teva’s Zymic Sandals, our feet felt comfy, stable, and supported. The thick, responsive cushioning efficiently absorbs shock, propelling us forward with each step. Our knees and ankles were also thankful for the added support, and regardless of the terrain's angle, we never felt unsure on uneven surfaces.
While on our test walks, we appreciated the convenient hook-and-loop closures for mid-mile adjustments. Similar to our top pick, this pair has extra padding around the heel to prevent blisters from forming. They’re also treated with a peppermint-based antimicrobial, so odors don’t build up over time.
Potential Flaws
- After several walks, we noticed that the inner lining of the sandal started showing slight signs of wear.
- While our tester, who has wide feet, found the perfect fit, we wish these came in half sizes to accommodate various foot types.
Meet Our Testers
One tester, who takes 10,000 steps daily, is postpartum and needs shoes that can accommodate her now wider feet. Our other tester takes fitness walks, runs errands, and spends hours at work on her feet.

Who They’re For
Best for walkers who want an everyday sandal at a cost-effective price.
Why We Love Them
Teva’s Original Universal Sandals stand out for their fully adjustable design, with multiple hook-and-loop straps to help you find the right fit. Their low-profile style makes them versatile; we seamlessly transitioned from the beach to the yoga studio and just about everywhere in between. Weighing just 6 ounces each, these sandals are the lightest on our list. This, along with their thin cushioning, provides a barely-there feel.
Similar to other Teva sandals we’ve tested, these are treated with a peppermint-based antimicrobial agent that fights odor-causing bacteria. Offering comfort for everyday wear, this pair matched our stride at nearly one-third the cost of comparable options on our list.
Potential Flaws
- We love the low-profile, lightweight cushioning, but it may not offer enough support for rough terrain or super long distances.
- While the straps felt stiff at first, they softened and molded to the curves of our feet after a few wears.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers doesn’t have a car, so she walks to and from most places (about two to three miles daily). Our other tester, who has a history of plantar fasciitis, walks her dog three to four times daily, with at least two of those walks spanning over a mile in distance.

Who They’re For
Best for anyone with plantar fasciitis who needs a stable sandal with plenty of cushioning (that’s also quite stylish).
Why We Love Them
When choosing walking shoes for plantar fasciitis, it’s important to prioritize well-cushioned heels, shock absorption, and arch support. That’s why we love ECCO’s Flowt 2 Band Sandals—the heel cup provides a protective base, while the responsive cushioning propels our strides forward. A stretchy top strap also ensures our feet stay securely in place, so there’s no worry of worsening symptoms in these shoes.
One tester, who has plantar fasciitis, found that these shoes helped her walk comfortably and confidently on sidewalks, pavement, and hard floors. Along with ample arch support, they offer a secure and stable fit thanks to the easily adjustable toe and ankle straps. If you don’t want your plantar fasciitis to stop your steps, we highly recommend this pair.
Potential Flaws
- We didn’t experience any chafing or irritation, but it’s worth noting that the straps aren’t padded.
- The soles can stain easily, so you’ll want to be conscious of where you’re wearing these and know that they’ll require cleaning.

Who They’re For
Best if you like to walk long distances, especially if you experience arch or heel pain.
Why We Love Them
While thick, supportive sandals are beneficial for easing arch and heel pain, they often have the downside of feeling heavy or cumbersome. But Sorel’s Kinetic Impact II Sling Low Sandal weighs just 7 ounces, helping relieve our pain without weighing us down. It also features a stylish, sporty design available in multiple color options.
During test walks, we noticed that these sandals are surprisingly stable and shock-absorbing. We also like the well-cushioned midsole, which provides effortless transitions and springy energy return. Similar to other Sorel sandals we tested, these feature a comfortable, chunky platform sole. And they’re incredibly durable, showing no signs of wear and tear after hundreds of miles.
Potential Flaws
- The cushioning may feel too thick for some wearers, though we found it to be super comfy.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers has wide feet and walks at least 5,000 steps daily. Our other tester averages 7,000 to 15,000 steps a day on the weekends.

Who They’re For
Best for sightseeing in a new city, taking long walks on the beach, or spending hours on your feet.
Why We Love Them
Do your shoes stop you from going the extra mile? Teva’s Terra Fi 5 Universal Sandals provide long-lasting comfort for long-distance walking. They feature a contoured footbed that delivers arch support and a curved sole that promotes a natural stride. A front and rear lip also prevents feet from slipping out. Plus, high-traction outsoles help us feel confident and sure-footed on any terrain (even light trails).
Throughout our testing, we appreciated the easily adjustable hook-and-loop closures, which helped us find a customized fit. And although they aren’t as heavily cushioned as other options on our list, these sandals effectively alleviated heel pain for one of our testers. Crafted from durable materials, this pair is ideal for your warm-weather adventures.
Potential Flaws
- They don’t come in half sizes, but after some trial and error, we were able to find the right fit.
- The straps feel slightly rough to the touch, but they were not uncomfortable at all throughout testing.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers has high arches and recently tore their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), but still walks about one mile every day while running errands or walking her dog. She enjoys hiking about twice a month, too. Our other tester has high arches and plantar fasciitis and walks an average of 4,000 to 6,000 steps daily.

Who They’re For
Best to add a stylish flair to any outfit for causal walks, running errands, and daily wear.
Why We Love Them
Searching for a reliable and stylish sandal suitable for daily wear? Look no further than Sorel’s VIIBE Sandal. Featuring puffy leather straps, a platformed sole, and fun hues, these sandals offer a playful design without skimping on support. The thick midsole keeps us comfortable for extended periods of wear, whether we’re walking the dogs or heading to a barre class.
Another feature we love is that these sandals are suitable for all foot types—our narrow- and wide-footed testers attest. We also appreciate the grippy outsole, which proves stable on grass, pavement, and dirt. Plus, the straps never got dirty, even as we walked through parks and down busy city streets—making these durable shoes even more suitable for everyday wear.
Potential Flaws
- While these sandals passed the bend test, we found them a bit too stiff for long-distance walks.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers is prone to plantar fasciitis and has wide feet. She walks her dog and runs errands in these shoes daily. Our other tester has narrow feet and lives in New York City, so she walks just about everywhere.

Who They’re For
Best for recreational hikers who want a waterproof shoe.
Why We Love Them
Hoka’s Hopara All-Terrain Shoes make great hiking shoes thanks to their sturdy construction and quick-lace system, which provides more ankle stability than other sandals to prevent injury on uneven terrain. The rubber outsole features deep, sticky lugs for even better grip in wet and dry conditions. Plus, we found the sandals incredibly durable after test walks on trails, wetlands, and more.
The extra-thick sole offers great shock absorption and a slight spring in our step. Meanwhile, a rubber toe cap protects against rocks and debris—which was much appreciated as we navigated through waterfalls in testing. Two pull tabs make these easy to slip on and off, so you’re ready to run out the door and hit the trails.
Potential Flaws
- These may not be the most aesthetically pleasing shoes, but they are ideal to keep you safe and sure-footed on the trails.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers has wide feet, neuroma, and a bunion in her left foot. She walks a lot outdoors. Our other tester also has wide feet and is a heavy pronator. She doesn’t own a car and, therefore, walks most places.

Who They’re For
Best for improving your posture and balance, especially for walking long distances.
Why We Love Them
Wearing shoes with great arch support isn’t just more comfortable, it can also improve your posture and balance. Although we tested many options with solid arch support, Skechers Go Walk Affinity Sandals are our favorite because they offer maximum stability for our tester with flat feet. They also come in two widths, catering to different foot sizes.
Weighing in at just 7 ounces, these are one of the lighter options we tested—making them ideal for travel. They’re also one of the more budget-friendly choices on our list. During test walks, we appreciated the contoured footbed, which molds to our feet to absorb shock and evenly distribute weight. Plus, we were able to easily adjust the straps to find the right fit.
Potential Flaws
- While the soft straps didn’t irritate our feet, we did notice that they were less breathable, leading to some sweat during test walks.
- The midsole is firmer compared to other options we’ve tested, but we still found it comfy enough for distance walks.
Meet Our Testers

Who They’re For
Best to help you feel surefooted on sand, gravel, or other uneven terrains—especially if you have unstable ankles and knees.
Why We Love Them
For walking on uneven terrain, you need sturdy, stable shoes like ECCO’s Yucatan Sandals. They feature an anatomically designed footbed that molds to our feet, promoting a natural stride and enhancing stability. Plus, three adjustable straps keep our feet locked into place.
During test walks, we found that the leather upper and thick midsole offer support for hours of non-stop walking. But despite being thick and supportive, the midsole never weighed us down. We also appreciate that the durable rubber outsole provides traction on all terrains. And we found this pair easy to clean—we wiped off dirt and dust with ease.
Potential Flaws
- These aren’t as breathable as other sandals we wore, leading to slightly sweaty feet.

Who They’re For
Best if you have high arches and want a stylish, supportive sandal for everyday wear.
Why We Love Them
Finding a sandal with good arch support is important for the overall health of your feet, Tarr says. If you have high arches, you need a pair (like Vionic’s Reyna Flatform Sandal) with extra height in the middle of the footbed. The ergonomic design hugs our arches while promoting a natural alignment for hours of comfy walking.
One of our testers has high arches and noticed that these sandals helped stabilize her feet, ankles, and knees. We also found that the well-cushioned footbed absorbs shock well, while the textured outsole offers reliable traction on uneven surfaces. Plus, the leather straps and an adjustable ankle buckle add support and a stylish flair.
Potential Flaws
- These shoes are less bouncy and responsive than others on our list, but this didn’t cause discomfort or foot fatigue.
- Not all wearers will like the chunky platform style, but we found that it adds support during our walks.
Meet Our Testers
One tester has high arches with slight bunions; she walks daily on her commute to work. Our other tester lives in the suburbs but commutes into the city for work weekly. She also walks for 15 minutes to and from her daughter's school for daily pickup.

Who They’re For
Best for running errands, beach walking, sightseeing, and more.
Why We Love Them
For comfy walking on any adventure, we recommend Teva’s Tirra Sandal. During testing, we noticed that the cushioned, contoured midsole provided comfy arch support (even preventing a plantar fasciitis flare-up for one tester). We also found that these sandals promote smooth heel-to-toe transitions and absorb shock well, encouraging efficient and safe strides.
The thick rubber outsoles provide reliable traction and durability. And we appreciate the easily adjustable straps at the ankle and top of the foot. Additionally, these sandals are super easy to clean—after a particularly muddy walk, we simply hosed them off and let them air dry, finding that they looked as good as new. Like other Tevas on our list, they feature an antimicrobial treatment that helps prevent odors.
Potential Flaws
- Although they’re well-cushioned, these sandals don't offer as much responsiveness as others on our list.
Meet Our Testers
One tester has high arches and slightly wide feet. She walks quite a bit at her job where she has to go up and down stairs often, and even walks for exercise outside of that. Our other tester is an underpronator who walks about two to six miles daily for exercise, oftentimes chasing after her two dogs.

Who They’re For
Best if you prefer a soft, plush sandal with an easily customizable, secure fit.
Why We Love Them
If you struggle to find sandals that fit, look for a pair (like Merrell’s Barava Backstraps) with several easily adjustable straps. The hook-and-loop closures help us get a secure fit whenever we slip them on and allow for easy adjustments mid-walk. A huge plus: The straps are made from soft webbing that never irritates our skin.
As for the feel, these are soft and plush underfoot. The foam midsole hugs our feet, promoting a natural alignment and comfy stride. We also noticed that these offer solid arch support. Although one of the lightest options on our list (at just 5 ounces), these shoes have a grippy outsole and raised footbed edges that keep us steady and surefooted on all terrains.
Potential Flaws
- We noticed that the heel on these is set lower than usual, which took some getting used to.
- It’s worth noting that, like many Teva sandals on our list, these aren’t available in half sizes.

Who They’re For
Best if you often struggle with finding a shoe for your foot shape, style, and size.
Why We Love Them
No matter your foot shape, pronation, or arch type, Munro’s Corine Sandals are suitable for just about every walker. Not only are they available in five different widths (the most width options on our list), but they also cater to different foot conditions. Plus, the adjustable hook-and-loop closure makes it easy to get the right fit.
When we tried these on, we noticed that the soft leather straps supported our feet without rubbing, chafing, or feeling restrictive. And as we walked, we felt secure and stable, never sliding around inside the sandal. This, along with the sturdy, curved outsole, made traversing grass, gravel, and concrete convenient and comfy.
Potential Flaws
- These tend to run small and narrow, but they’re available in five widths, so it’s easy to find the right fit.
Meet Our Testers

Who They’re For
Best if you want to invest in Birkenstocks but don’t know where to start.
Why We Love Them
Want a pair of Birkenstocks? Overwhelmed by the options? We recommend the comfy, supportive Birkenstock Milano Big Buckle Sandals. Much of this sandal’s stability comes from the strap in the middle of the foot, says podiatric surgeon Diana Valencia, DPM, But we also found that the toe strap and back strap kept our feet securely in place as we trekked around town.
The oiled leather upper and buckled strap design create a comfortable sandal that’s as functional as it is stylish. During testing, we found that the foam outsole is lightweight, and the contoured footbed provides solid arch support (even for one tester who overpronates). We also love the reliable durability, making this pair an investment that will last for many, many miles.
Potential Flaws
- Similar to other Birkenstocks, the footbed can feel stiff at first. But after a few wears, it molds to your unique foot shape for a comfy, customized fit.
Meet Our Testers
Both of our testers have high arches. One of them walks 8,000 to 20,000 steps when in an office (and less when working from home). Our other tester is more of a seasonal walker who tends to walk with her kids for fitness in the warmer months.

Who They’re For
Best if you prefer a firm (instead of soft) feel.
Why We Love Them
Naot’s Kayla Sandals are stylish, strappy wedges that proved comfy throughout testing. They feel firmer underfoot than other options we tested, providing exceptional support and stability. While less soft and squishy, these are still flexible—passing the bend portion of our testing process.
Available in three widths and over 20 different colors, these sleek sandals are also versatile for different foot shapes and personal styles. The wedge heel provides a little lift without putting pressure on our feet. We also noticed that these feel lightweight and easy to wear, whether you want to dress them up or down.
Potential Flaws
- While we were able to find a comfy fit, we do wish that the straps located above our toes were adjustable.

Who They’re For
Best for someone seeking a stylish summer sandal that’s just as functional as it is fashionable.
Why We Love Them
Finding a stylish pair of platforms that are suitable for walking seemed impossible until we found Sorel’s Kinetic Impact Slingback Heel Sandal. The chunky yet cushy sole takes comfort and support to new heights. But despite their 1.5-inch platform, these sandals are still quite lightweight and sturdy.
During test walks, we noticed that our feet felt supported, thanks to the thick, responsive cushioning. Plus, the negative space between the heel and forefoot provides ample flexibility for natural strides. And a durable, grippy outsole protects against rocks, debris, and more.
Potential Flaws
- The high platform isn't ideal for fitness walking. Instead, try one of our picks from Teva.

Who They’re For
Best if you need a packable shoe that can be dressed up or down for travel.
Why We Love Them
Travelers need comfy, versatile, and easy-to-pack footwear, like Chaco’s Townes Sandals. We wore these just about everywhere, staying stable and supported thanks to the cushioned footbed that’s raised around the edges. Gentle arch support also promotes a natural foot alignment, while the slightly curved sole helps ease transitions on all terrains.
During testing, we found that this pair passed the bend test—flexing in all the right places and moving freely with our feet. Plus, buttery soft leather straps and cushy soles make them even more comfortable. Even when logging thousands of steps, our feet can count on these all day long.
Potential Flaws
- These shoes are slightly heavier than other options on our list, but this didn’t weigh down our strides.
- Our feet sweat easily while wearing these, likely because they’re mostly made from leather instead of breathable mesh or foam.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers, who has underpronated feet, walks about 12 hours daily for their job. Our other tester has narrow feet and takes their dog on at least two daily walks. She walks more than that when she goes into an office for work.

What to Look for When Shopping for Women’s Walking Sandals
- Arch Support: The level of arch support you need depends on your foot type. If you have flat feet, opt for sandals with ample arch support. If you have normal arches, choose a pair that’s designed to maintain your natural alignment. If you’re unsure how much arch support is right for you, prioritize comfort first, Tarr says. And always avoid sandals with a completely flat footbed, as they’ll lack necessary support, Sharkey says.
- Adjustability: Finding walking sandals that are adjustable is key to getting a comfortable, personalized fit. Look for options that offer features such as buckles, hook-and-loop closures, bungee systems, or laces that are user-friendly and easy to adjust.
- Heel Straps: You may also want to consider choosing sandals with a heel strap for added stability when walking. Sandals without heel straps may lead you to overwork your feet as your toes grip the shoe for support. Opting for sandals with a heel strap can alleviate this issue, reducing foot fatigue and providing a more comfortable walking experience.
- Traction: Look for sandals with good traction that will keep you stable on different surfaces and terrains. This makes them safer to wear—plus, you won’t have to worry that they’ll start to slide off while you’re walking, Tarr says. Keep in mind that the stiffer and deeper the tread on the outsole, the more traction the shoe will provide.
- Durability: Make sure your sandals can withstand all the hiking, trekking, climbing, and sightseeing you’ll want to do while wearing them. One way to ensure your sandals last is to select ones made with durable materials, like leather or synthetics.
How We Tested the Walking Sandals
To find the best walking sandals, we tested dozens of pairs from popular, trusted brands. When testing, we evaluate each shoe based on the following critical criteria:
- Fit: When trying each sandal on for the first time, we evaluate its initial fit–is it too tight, too loose, or just right? We also consider if the sizing is accurate and whether we’d recommend sizing up or down. During our test walks, we note if our toes or heels hang over the edge of the shoe and if our feet slide around. We prioritize sandals that offer a snug, supportive fit for extended wear and walks.
- Stability: As we continue to walk in each pair, we carefully note any signs of knee or ankle instability. We consider if the midsole offers enough shock absorption and support for safe and smooth heel-to-toe transitions across varied terrains. We only recommend sandals that help us feel confident on all surfaces.
- Responsiveness: Next, we assess each sandal’s level of responsiveness, or how effectively it helps propel us forward with each stride. During walks, we consider whether the sandal offers a slow or quick bounce-back during transitions. We select sandals with springy responsiveness to enhance movements and reduce fatigue.
- Cushioning: We evaluate the thickness and density of each sandal’s midsole to determine its level of comfort and support. As we walk, we assess whether the shoe feels plush or firm and how this affects our experience. We also pay attention to any pressure points and signs of rubbing or chafing.
- Comfort: Your walking sandals obviously need to be comfortable enough to walk in, so we consider several factors. In testing, we ask ourselves: Is there enough arch support? Are there any signs of chafing or blistering? Do our feet overheat due to a lack of breathability? Our final list only includes sandals that we found comfortable for all-day wear and extended walks.
- Quality: Along with comfort, quality is essential. At the beginning of testing, we thoroughly inspect the sandals for any initial damage or quality concerns. We also perform a bend test to gauge the shoes' flexibility, ensuring they neither bend too easily or lack flexibility. As testing progresses, we continue to evaluate the shoes for any signs of wear and tear (like rips, loose treads, broken buckles, and more).
- Value: Finally, after testing is complete, we look at the price of each sandal to assign a fair value score. Drawing from our experience, we consider whether the sandals are reasonably priced and whether we would purchase them at their regular price or during a sale. Sandals only earn a spot on our list if they meet our standards for affordability and quality. And we only include options we would personally buy or recommend to a friend.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are sandals good to walk in?
Yes, as long as you opt for a pair with secure closures or straps and thick soles to protect your feet from uneven terrain and debris. Choosing the right sandals can help relieve pressure in different parts of your feet as you walk short and long distances.
How often should you replace your sandals?
To check the wear on your sandals, place them on a flat surface and check to see how level they look, Tarr suggests. If they sag or lean to one side, this is a sign that the sole has worn down too much.
Is it bad to walk long distances in sandals?
Not necessarily, Tarr says. As long as you feel comfortable and supported, it’s generally fine. However, it’s important to select sandals with a sturdy, supportive structure to prevent discomfort or injury as you go the distance.
